My name is
Richard Kraneis (that's my
son Fritz and I on the right) and I've decided to bring my computer
training to you.
Tell me,
what good is a long computer book if you never read it
or just put it on your shelf? Over the past 12
years I've taught about 10,000 people in
the Chicago, IL, USA area how to use computers.
How many
times have you attended a computer class only to say, "I
wish they would skip the basic stuff and just teach me
the power techniques."?
The
World's Shortest Excel Book is short enough that you
will read it. And TWSEB is valuable enough
that you will read it more than once.
Here
are just some of the powerful secrets, tips & techniques
my e-book will teach you
-
"My
co-worker just resigned and now I have to maintain all
his spreadsheets for my manager. How do I learn
someone else's spreadsheets quickly?" (That's the
"Secret" to Excel in Chapter 2).
-
"How do
I build a pivot table? I've seen them but I
just don't understand how to build them." Chapter
10 will make it easier.
-
Everyone
says macros save time. But how can you save
time with a macro when you waste time trying to learn
them (Chapter 13)?
-
Why
isn't my new formula working? Chapter 3 can
help you figure out why some of your formulas aren't
working.
-
"My
secretary will save 3-4 hours of formatting time each week with this
technique." That's what one manager told me
after learning just part of chapter 4.
-
"Our
customers aren't paying their bills quick enough.
How do I calculate the age of a customer's bill in
days?" This is called date math (Chapter 6).
-
I'd like to
use an IF formula. But no one in the office can
seem to explain IF formulas to me (I can; see
Chapter 8).
-
Excel has 3
worksheets. Did you know that Excel can have up to
255 worksheets? What you learn about 3-D
spreadsheets in chapter 9 will save you time and impress your co-workers
(but they won't admit it).
-
"I can
barely make an Excel graph. Can anyone make this
easier?" Try reading chapter 11 and
learning my 3 techniques to better graphs.
Written
in Simple English with Useful Snapshots
The book
is written in simple English with simple explanations.
Here's a few paragraphs and snapshots from the book
discussing pivot tables.
This is the first page of a two page write-up on pivot
tables.
Understanding Pivot Tables
A
pivot table is a hybrid software technique that's
part spreadsheet and part database. When managers
see a pivot table for the first time, they want
their staff to build one for them. (If the phrase
pivot table is new to you, you can find more
information in Excel's help system.)
What
does a pivot table look like? Let's take a
look at a simple database in Excel and then
process the data as a pivot table.
Here's the BEFORE picture of a sales
spreadsheet before its been processed or re-done
as a pivot table. A manager might ask for sales
totals by customers. Or maybe a manager wants to
see sales by product and then by salesperson. In
an effort to please their manager, users may sort,
count, do anything they can to give the manager
what they want.

Here's the AFTER picture when the data has
been processed or re-done as a pivot table. The
tiles Customer, Product, and Salesman are moveable
to give you different views or perspectives on the
data.

TESTIMONIALS
One
reader said, "Thanks for the inspiration."
The
World's Shortest Excel Book is still very young.
But the review you see below was from Glenda
of Kansas, U.S.A. Glenda purchased my e-book in
January, 2004. Glenda made my day.

Reading your 28
pages was well worth the small investment!
I've had no "formal" training in Excel, but use it
daily--for
many things, and find it difficult to
function without it. But, I tend to not
use it to its capability, only because I don't know
what it is. You've given just enough
information in 28 pages to stir the creative juices
and begin to explore and experiment. Thanks
for the inspiration! It's pretty embarrassing
to find that there were shortcuts and smarter ways
of doing things that I've been doing for years... |

I also want to
thank you for an excellent publication. I
would say that I knew about half of the content, but
that the half I didn't, was invaluable. |

Hi
Richard,
I just
3 seconds ago sent an email to Debbie Weil and
asked her to tell you that I had bought your book
right after reading her good comments. I, in
Montreal, read Debbie's column who brings me to
your page, so that I can buy this little booklet
that will certainly help me improve my Excel
skills (which is about time at 41...).
Good
luck with your online sales ! Merci.

First Email: Thanks for
saving my butt last week with your book. I was
totally lost in pivot tables with over 10,000 source
records. I paid the 17 smackers just to learn how
to sort of work with them. I can't
say it was comprehensive, but you DO have a gift for
stating the obvious. THEY MOVE.
Perfection.
Second Email: I'm a
quick study, but am so busy just trying to get
THROUGH things that I don't have time to sit down
with a manual and digest it all. You do have a
talent for getting the important information across
in a concise and easy to follow manner. You
may certainly use my comments, and hey, keep those
cards and letters coming. I'll look for more
goodies as they're available. |

So much is packed into
these 28 pages, I know that I will use your book as
a standard from which I judge other Excel books. It
is written in clear, easy to understand language
and the examples are reliable and utilize the very
features you profile. I would recommend this book
to anyone who uses Excel - what a great addition to
your computer library. |

To be honest: there are so many excel-books. The
only reason why I bought yours was the fact ...
that it is so short. I learnt Pivot in 10 minutes!
Great!

Dear Mr. Kraneis;
Thank you so much for your practical, down to earth
book. In just one weekend I can now do practically
anything the advanced skills test would
require---and it all makes sense! I have bought
other "quick study" books and never could get
through them.
Your clear, precise explanations and instructions on
the most practical of tasks has opened up a world of
possibilities in Excel that I assumed could only be
obtained in one of those expensive Excel training
courses. |

Richard - Just a note
to say thanks for taking the time to publish your
World's Shortest Excel Book. As a
long time Excel user (& lotus before that), I can
honestly say it was a good refresher for me ..and I
picked up a few new ideas. You know how spreadsheet
lovers like to discover & use new ideas. |

Reasons to
buy
my e-book
today
Here are
some good reasons to make your purchase today.
-
It's
fun. I
wrote TWSEB (The World's Shortest Excel Book)
to have some fun and pay for my daughter's expenses in college. I succeeded on both counts.
For me, Excel is fun. I've tried to put the fun
back into computers and using Excel.
-
It will
save you time. If
you want to improve your Excel skills and my TWSEB
is new for you, you will save a bunch of time on
projects. Guaranteed.
-
You can
make Excel an ally and a friend. Some people
purchase this e-book because they know they're not as
good with Excel as they would like to be. Others
purchase my e-book to become power users. If Excel is an ally and a friend,
won't that help improve your career or your business?
You
will receive my E-Book, Practice Files
and bonuses
#1:
You receive The World's Shortest Excel Book.
Well, of
course you will receive my e-book. 12 concepts, 29
pages, and over 50 techniques for learning Excel
effectively and quickly. That's why you are here.
But when you keep reading, you will find some more
surprise bonuses.
#2:
You receive five Excel practice files
that are needed for the e-book.
It's
hard to learn just from a book, or an e-book.
That's why my e-book comes with Excel practice files.
-
ExcelLearningFile.xls - This practice file has 21
worksheet learning examples. It's the file that
you will use the most with my e-book.
- A
Sales Pivot Table.xls - This is the file for
learning how to do simple pivot tables.
-
Physician Expense Tracking.xls - This file helps
you understand Excel 3-D spreadsheets.
-
VLOOKUP and Sales Orders - A file demonstrating
how VLOOKUP might be used to "translate" item purchase
codes into item descriptions.
-
MacroPractice.xls - This is your sample file for
working on the macro chapter in the e-book.
#3:
You receive The Spreadsheet for Living.xls File
Sometimes
in life and in spreadsheets, all of us could use a
little help. That's why I'm including the
Spreadsheet for Living Excel file. Spreadsheets can
help you with many tasks from planning your family
budget to dieting to picking lottery numbers.
Here are some of my favorite spreadsheets, no hard
work needed. Just add your own information.
- Family budget. Everyone
needs a family budget. Whether you follow it or
not is the real question. But it's here, ready
and waiting.
- Family net worth statement.
How much am I worth? It's the classic Assets -
Liabilities = Net Worth Statement.
- A
mortgage calculator. What will my mortgage
cost? Can I still afford the mortgage when I
factor in the real estate taxes and insurance?
How big a mortgage can I afford?
- Retirement plan. "If I'm 23
and I save $500 a month, can I retire when I'm 43?"
This spreadsheet answers questions like that.
- BMI
spreadsheet. There actually is a simple
spreadsheet for calculating your estimated body fat.
Put down that sweet roll. Estimate your BMI.
- Picking lottery number spreadsheet.
Once, a class asked me to skip one of my formula
sessions and just teach them how to randomly pick
lottery numbers.
- Math Worksheets for Teachers.
Addition,
subtraction, and multiplication worksheet. Every
time you press the F9 key, you get a brand new
worksheet with new math problems for your grade school students.
#4:
You Get Educational Emails
People
have started emailing me hellos and Excel
questions. Although I can't promise to answer
every email I receive, I do read every question from my
readers. Sometimes I answer your emails directly.
I also send useful educational emails several times a
month. Here's one satisfied customer from Florida,
USA, after I sent her and hundreds of other readers an
educational Excel problem.
|
Jennifer B., Florida, USA |
Rich,
I have
